Old Nun Christens New Hall

An old-fashioned, pre-Vatican II era nun, helped us celebrate the opening of the new Robert A. Sheppard Auditorium at the Abbey last Friday night (Feb. 12th).  All the way from “south Chicago,”  Sister brought us an engaging performance of Late Nite Catechism, a one-nun play by Vicki Quade and Maripat Donovan that has been playing to appreciative parochial school alumni across the country.  Actually, you didn’t need to go to Catholic school to enjoy the show, but if you did it certainly seemed like you had stepped right back into your old classroom.  The only thing you probably did not remember was all the laughter.

Sister was spot-on, in her full length gabardine habit and stiffly starched white wimple. And she certainly was in her place on a stage set as the front of a grammar school classroom.  She was not content, however, to keep to the stage, wandering down into her “class” regularly to reward students who answered questions correctly, and to chastise those who were misbehaving or who had not dressed in appropriately modest fashion.  For the most part, our students did themselves proud, and clearly they enjoyed every minute of it.  It’s amazing how much of the old Baltimore catechism you can summon up when you really need to.

The play was a smash, and the venue received rave reviews as well.  The old gym at the Abbey has been transformed into a first class auditorium, complete with theater-style seating and even a balcony.  Sight-lines, sound and lighting were all terrific.  Benedictine now has an assembly hall and performance space that the school community will enjoy for many years to come.

What a pleasure it was to christen our new hall with a performance that recalled so many reasons why we love Catholic education.  Sister didn’t teach us much that was new, but that she reminded us – in charming fashion - of things we learned a long time ago.  Although, Sister did learn one thing herself:  Where do good Catholics go when they die.  Bliley’s, of course.

Here are some comments received from the audience:

  • "I just wanted let you know how much I enjoyed the play last Friday night. It was hilarious, and I never have laughed so hard."
  • “Late Nite Catechism” was amazingly funny and memory-filled for me as well as for so many others who attended.  What a wonderful evening!
  • "We attended the benefit performance of "Late Night Catechism" last night and IT WAS WONDERFUL!!!!  I can't tell you how much we both enjoyed it.  It was a laugh a minute and extremely well done.  The new auditorium at the Abbey is lovely and the entire event was first class."

Thank you very much to Linda Toomey for chairing the event.  Also, thank you to Spotts Fain and the Benedictine PTO for sponsoring this great event.

The event netted $2471 for the Father Adrian Education Fund, which best benefits the school and the students.  Also, at the end of the evening, $925.25 was raised for Little Sisters of the Poor by our generous attendees.  Mother Marcel was shocked and surprised at this generous and unexpected donation.
