From the Times Dispatch:
Top ranked Benedictine overcame adversity and a feisty second ranked Henrico squad to claim the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament title 66-59 at the Siegel Center on Saturday night. It was the Cadets’ fourth title out of five trips to the championship game since 2003.
The game lived up to the billing of a top-two team tug-of-war as Benedictine repeatedly opened leads only to see Henrico close the gap.
“We showed a level of mental toughness that we’ve been working toward,” said Benedictine first year head coach Robert Churchwell III. “That’s probably what I’m most proud of.”
Benedictine ran out to a quick 13-2 lead getting scores from four of its five starters but Henrico showed their tenaciousness by closing the gap to 19-12 by the end of the first period.
With four minutes remaining in the half, the Warriors had closed to within five, 30-25. But a vicious in-your-face dunk by Benedictine’s L.G. Gill sparked the Cadets to a 40-30 lead with under a minute to play.
Yet, even in the final minute of the second Henrico made a comeback when Stephen Booker drew a foul from Nick Gorski on a made shot. The free throw trimmed Benedictine’s lead to seven heading into the locker room.
The Cadets had an opportunity to widen the margin but Gorski was called for charging with 21.5 seconds remaining, signaling a trend for Benedictine throughout the remainder of the game.
Henrico came out with intensity to start the second half and showed their passing skills scoring their first five baskets off assists.
More importantly the Warriors’ pesky full court defense prevented baskets and harassed the Cadet ball handlers to create turnovers.
“Getting the ball up the floor against their pressure all night long, that pressure wears you down,” Churchwell said.
With five minutes remaining in the period, Marvin Smith Jr. connected on two free throws to pull the Warriors within one, 46-45.
On Benedictine’s next possession, Kris Lane took a pass from Nick Coppola but Lane was whistled for a charge when he turned to the basket.
“That’s real tough being as we get a lot of points in transition, when you have to come and make that decision whether you’re going to pass it or shoot it,” said Cadet junior guard Robert Johnson. “Even when we was passing inside to the big man, jump-stopping then passing, they were still sliding and taking charges on the big man so it was tough.”
In all, the Cadets were tagged with five charging calls, four in the second half alone on drives to the basket.
“Calls like that, whether they’re good or bad, can easily take you out of the game,” Churchwell said. “I think it did kind of wear on us a little bit but you’ve got to give Henrico a lot of credit. They put their body in the way and they took the charges and to be able to overcome that, you start to see signs of that mental toughness.”
The Cadets displayed their resolve scoring five straight. Gill connected on a plus-one field goal followed by three free throws from Johnson.
Still, Henrico refused to go away and a jumper by Timmy Jones pulled the Warriors within two, 56-54 with less than five minutes remaining.
The Cadets looked to widen the margin on a breakout, but Raymon Minor was called for his second charge on a pull-up over R.J. Moses.
Once again Benedictine showed their resolve. Getting the ball back, Minor drilled a three from the right baseline, Johnson scored on a put-back and Nick Coppola on a plus-one field goal to put Benedictine ahead 62-54 with less than two minutes remaining.
Johnson, who scored 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the champions was named the tournament MVP. He was joined on the all-tournament team by teammate Khris Lane, Henrico’s Tim Jones, St. Christopher’s Rodney Williams and Cosby’s Troy Caupain.
Jordon Talley led Henrico with 15 points. Jones added 13, and Smith had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The Cadets reached the championship by rolling past Manchester 78-33 then pulling out a hard fought 76-52 win over St. Christopher’s. Henrico downed Trinity 71-68 then defeated John Marshall 84-66.
The Cadets get little time to enjoy the holidays as they return to action as host of the Benedictine Capital Classic. Benedictine opens against Bishop Walsh in an 8 p.m. contest on Dec. 27. Second round games are on Dec. 28 with the championship on Dec. 29. |

From the Times Dispatch:
Robert Johnson was excited about playing in his first Diamond Springs Benedictine Capital City Classic.
Johnson, a former L.C. Bird standout who transferred to Benedictine this year, didn’t know what to expect.
“I wanted to come out and make a good impression,” Johnson said after leading the Cadets to an opening-round, 81-54 victory over Bishop Walsh of Cumberland, Md., Thursday night at Benedictine’s Memorial Gym.
Knocking down six 3-pointers is a good way to make a good impression, and with Raymon Minor sinking two 3s from the opposite wing in the first half, the Cadets were able to quickly build a comfortable margin.
“We’re very fortunate to have guys that shoot that well. It opens up a lot for us,” first-year Benedictine coach Robert Churchwell III said.
The Cadets (12-0) meet John Carroll of Bel Air, Md., in tonight’s second semifinal at 8:30.
John Carroll edged Douglas Freeman 47-45 on a tip-in with 3.9 seconds left.
The first semifinal matches The Haverford School of Haverford, Pa., against McDonogh of Owings Mill, Md., at 6:30 p.m. Haverford defeated Mount Saint Michael Academy of the Bronx, N.Y., 54-47. McDonogh scraped by Don Bosco Prep of Ramsey, N.J. 74-70.
Douglas Freeman and Bishop Walsh square off at 4:45.
The Cadets, winners of The Times-Dispatch Invitational before Christmas for the fourth time, are seeking a third “double” with the BCCC.
Benedictine captured the BCCC title after winning the TDIT in 2003 and 2006. The Cadets won the 2009 TDIT but lost in the BCCC.
“The gym is packed (estimated 1,300 Thursday night). There are so many alums. It definitely provides energy … the BCCC aura,” Churchwell said.
The Cadets’ transition offense left the visiting Spartans chasing all night. Bishop Walsh cut a 15-point deficit to five points in the second quarter, but the Cadets built the lead back to nine points at the break and rolled in the second half.
Johnson finished with 22 points, 16 in the first half. Minor contributed 12 points and L.G. Gill added 11.
Quincy Redmon (13), Brandon Reed (12) and Chris Scarlett (11) scored in double figures for Bishop Walsh.
John Carroll’s Michael Tertsea tipped in Kimbal Mackenzie’s missed layup to defeat Douglas Freeman.
The Rebels (6-3) led 25-21 at halftime thanks to the 3-point shooting of Luke Rosman and Jimmy Marshall, who scored nine points each before the break. Rosman was 3 for 3 from beyond the arc. Both finished the game with 11 points, as did John Lutkenhaus.
Mackenzie, who led John Carroll with 18 points, opened the third quarter with two 3-pointers to give the Patriots a lead they never gave up.
Douglas Freeman battled back from a seven-point deficit starting the fourth quarter to knot the score at 43 and 45 on drives to the basket by Sinclair Farinholt.
Tertsea scored only four points, but all came in the last minute. Rodney Elliott added 11 points for John Carroll, which went 11 for 11 from the foul line. |

From the Times Dispatch:
It is fitting that Benedictine College Preparatory is a military school because veteran guards Nick Coppola and Robert Johnson know a thing or two about reporting for duty.
Johnson, a 6-foot-1 junior, poured in 16 first-half points and Coppola, a 6-1 senior, dished out five assists as Benedictine broke to a 29-19 halftime lead. The multi-talented duo kept the pedal to the metal as the Cadets held off McDonogh School of Baltimore County, Md., 60-49 in the championship game of 47th annual Diamond Springs Benedictine Capital City Classic on Saturday.
“This is a big win for us,” said Robert Churchwell III, Benedictine’s first-year coach. “I believe the No. 1 reason is because it is our tournament. Then you have to go back and look at the history of the event and see how special it is.”
Churchwell said he didn’t get a lot of rest between the semifinal and final game.
“I told the guys today that I maybe got three hours sleep last night because I felt like I didn’t do a good enough job of preparing them (for the semifinal game),” Churchwell said. “We only had two practices and we need to get in some repetitions. But I have enough confidence in their ability that I know they will help us get through it.”
Churchwell said the Cadets can and will get better. Improvement, he said, starts at the defensive end and is aided by communication.
With the win, Benedictine not only improved to 14-0 and avenged last year’s BCCC final loss but captured its fourth tournament championship this season. Also, the Cadets claimed their 11th BCCC title and seventh since 2001.
Johnson got it all started with 13 first-quarter points as the Cadets broke to a 20-12 lead.
The Cadets increased the margin to 10 points by intermission. However,
the Eagles’ guard tandem of B. J. Andrews and Taysean Scott combined for nine points to keep McDonogh within striking range.
McDonogh (5-7), which placed two players on the all-tourney team — Andrews (16 points) and Evan Fisher (12) — got as close as five points at 50-45 with 2:34 left before the home team pulled away on a pair of nifty full-court conversions.
Johnson finished with a game-high 20 points and collected the MVP trophy. He was joined on the all-tournament squad by teammates Coppola (seven points), L.G. Gill (12 points, six rebounds) and Khris Lane (10 points, five rebounds).
“We just try to play every tournament like we play every game,” Johnson said. “And I try to do whatever I can to help the team — whether it is scoring, defense or hitting my free throws. I feel very comfortable playing here and we have a lot of talent. I think one thing we have to continue to do is play consistently and improve on our defense and rebounding.”
Coppola, who rang up 21 assists in three BCCC games, agreed.
“We do have a lot of talent and it is a lot of fun to run things (from the point guard position),” he said. “This team does a great job of sticking together, no one yells at one another and we just kind of roll with the punches.” |

Boys basketball: Benedictine holds off Trinity BY THOMAS C. DOZIER Special correspondentRichmond Times-Dispatch
On one of the coldest days in the past two years in Central Virginia, things heated up quite nicely at the Trinity Episcopal Estes Center.
Benedictine, the top-ranked team in The Times-Dispatch Top 10 poll, used a heavy dose of Robert Johnson and L.G. Gill, and drained 8 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off the No. 6 Titans 62-61 on Wednesday in front of a near-capacity crowd.
“The only one positive thing I take away from this game is we won,” said Benedictine first-year coach Robert Churchwell III. “We did not play well and I am very disappointed. That is why we will practice hard tomorrow, to figure this out.”
The game came down to one play with 3.9 seconds left and Trinity inbounding the ball down by three. Andrew Ferrell-Logan found Jaylen Hinton on the run, and Hinton got off a 3-point attempt with just less than 2 seconds left. Dayton Strader grabbed the rebound and hit a put-back shot at the buzzer to provide the final margin.
“It was a play we got from scrimmaging James River,” said Trinity second-year coach Rick Hamlin. “We put it in on Monday, and with Ferrell-Logan being a former quarterback, he hit Hinton in stride. I think Hinton thought he was going to be fouled and got the shot up as quick as possible. The thing is 3.9 seconds is a lot of time, and you can see that by we were able to get the rebound and the basket, so Hinton may have been able to take a couple more dribbles.
“He is our captain and he is the one we want taking that shot. “
Johnson scored a game-high 25 points, including three 3-pointers, to pace Benedictine. Gill chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds.
Still, the Titans’ offense gave the Cadets fits.
“They executed their offense and we didn’t play well defensively,” Churchwell said. “We didn’t rotate to help out. I guess you could say they executed their offense much better than we played defense.”
As a result, Benedictine, a team that predominantly plays man-to-man, was forced to go zone in the fourth quarter.
Trinity fell behind 6-2 early in the first quarter, but drained three 3-pointers to spark an 11-4 run to close out the first quarter for a 16-12 lead.
Then, Johnson, who has been the MVP in four tournaments this year, found his groove. Johnson, a 6-foot-1 junior, scored 10 of his 14 first-half points to give the Cadets a 30-27 halftime lead. Gill contributed eight points and five rebounds.
Even though Benedictine (19-2) led by eight on three occasions in the third quarter, Trinity (12-5) went on another 11-4 run to cut the deficit to 49-48 entering the fourth quarter.
The Cadets maintained the lead throughout the fourth quarter, under the direction of Nick Coppola, and the team hit the appropriate free throws to survive Trinity’s last-second shot attempt.
Coppola, who will play at Louisiana-Monroe, scored 10 points and handed out seven assists.
Ferrell-Logan led the Titans with 19 points. Hinton had 10 points, five assists and three steals. |

Seniors lead Benedictine to win over Christchurch BY THOMAS C. DOZIER Special correspondentRichmond Times-Dispatch
It was Senior Night at Benedictine, and the class of 2013 couldn’t have picked a better time to collectively roll out its finest performance as a season.
Five seniors – Nick Coppola, L.G. Gill, Nick Gorski, Khris Lane (not in uniform) and Josh Pilot – were honored before the Cadets played their final regular-season home game, and each one did something special in the 10thannual Warren Rutledge Classic.
Gill scored a game-high 23 points, Coppola added 16 points and nine assists, Pilot hit a big 3-pointer in the second half and Gorski worked inside for seven points and pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds as Benedictine pulled away from visiting Christchurch 70-60 held Court at Memorial Gymnasium on Friday.
“This is special,” said Benedictine first-year coach Robert Churchwell III. “Mainly because we have been through so much adversity, the players have hung together and bought into what we are doing. But along the way, we have become a family.”
The beauty of this victory was that every single dressed player contributed to the victory, which at times, put the reserve players on display.
“I think they started getting their confidence from the beginning,” Churchwell added. “We have talked to them about the fact they are only one ankle sprain, one bad grade or one family emergency from having to step up. And they all stepped up tonight.”
Even though it was the final home game, the Cadets have six more games including a tournament at St. Albans in Washington, D.C. before the VISAA gets underway.
Benedictine began the first half on a 5-0 run and ended the half on an electric 6-0 to take a five-point lead (33-28) into the locker room at intermission.
The first half was fast and furious but most of all physical. In all, there were 15 total fouls called, including four technical fouls and an ejection. But in-between there was some terrific high-school basketball being played on Rut Court.
At half, Gill with 11 points and seven rebounds and Coppola with 10 points, five rebounds and four assists led the way for the home team while 6-7 Devin Robinson paced the Seahorses with 13 points and seven rebounds. In fact, it was the duo of Coppola-Gill that spearheaded a 6-0 run in the final minute of the first half that had the home team walking on air.
It first started when Gill hit a jumper in the lane off the nifty assist from Pilot, then Coppola sent a lob-pass high in the air for a Gill dunk and Coppola finished it off with an underhand left-handed layup to give his team the five-point lead and the ultimate momentum boost.
“We felt the alley-oop play was the play of the game,” said Coppola, who was awarded the game’s MVP award. “When knew when we came into the locker room it felt like it was our time to shine.
“Plus no one wants to lose on Senior Night, so we went hard the rest of the way. We have all been working hard since our freshmen year and it is nice to go out with a win like this on a special night.”
With the win, Benedictine, the top-ranked team in the Times-Dispatch Top 10 and ranked No. 4 in the VISAA poll, improved to a 25-2 record and upped its winning streak to nine games.
Christchurch, No. 7 in the VISAA poll, has four players from the Central Region area including Hanover natives Nick Douglas and Justin Peebles. Douglas finished with eight points as the Seahorses seven-game winning streak came to an end.
Devin Robinson (Chesterfield), another player from the area, gave the Seahorses (17-6) a big lift in the first half and ended the night with 16 points, including three 3-pointers and 12 rebounds while team senior captain Brendan Cole paced the Prep League team with 24 points.
“Coming into the game we knew since it was Senior Night we just wanted to leave it all out there on the court,” Gill explained. “We are not surprised that some of the role players stepped up, they are a pretty confident group and they were ready when we needed them. But I think the game changed on the pass for the dunk right before the half. It got the fans motivated and just kept us going throughout the second half.”
Coppola, who will play at Louisiana-Monroe, helped out inside with eight rebounds while junior Raymon Minor, who suffered an eye injury against John Marshall last Saturday, did not dress . |

Defense keys triumph by Benedictine

Defense keys triumph by Benedictine BY JONATHAN HOWARD Special correspondentRichmond Times-Dispatch
If the adage that defense wins championships is true, Benedictine is off to a good start.
The Cadets expanded on an 11-point halftime lead by holding visiting Bishop Ireton to 21.1 percent shooting in the second half in a 68-40 VISAA Division I quarterfinal victory on Wednesday.
The defensive effort mainly consisted of forcing difficult and contested shots rather than turnovers. The visiting Cardinals finished shooting 36.8 percent from the field, but turned over the ball only nine times.
“That’s just one thing that we’ve harped on all year,” Benedictine coach Robert Churchwell III said. “Most of the year, our defensive effort has been decent, but over the last couple weeks, it hasn’t been as good.
“The boys just made a commitment to go out and play tonight.”
After a tightly contested first quarter, Benedictine (28-4) started to pull away in the second. An L.G. Gill 3-pointer to start the period sparked an 11-0 run to give the Cadets a 26-13 lead with 6:19 to play in the half. But Bishop Ireton (18-15) closed to 31-25 with 1:58 to go. With time running out in the half, Gill scored the final five points. The final three came with 7 seconds left and gave Benedictine a 36-25 lead.
Gill finished the first half with 15 points and gave his team momentum. The Cadets allowed only two field goals in the third quarter and went over 12 minutes before allowing another. During that stretch Benedictine, the tournament’s fourth seed, allowed Bishop Ireton four points from the foul line. By the time the Cardinals recorded another field goal, Benedictine led by 30.
“I just think all year, one of the things we’ve said is these guys need to take ownership. We can only draw up so many X’s and O’s,” Churchwell said. “They have to take ownership. We have some senior captains, they stepped up, and that’s what they did.”
Gill finished with a game-high 26 points and had eight rebounds. Nick Coppola scored 13 points and added nine assists for Benedictine.
Louis Khouri led Bishop Ireton with 11 points.
“I never try to come out and do too much. I just let the game come to me. Tonight that’s exactly what I did.” Gill said. “I just came out, like I said, I just had a state championship on my mind. I’m determined.”
The Cadets will face No. 8 seed Liberty Christian in Friday’s first semifinal. LCA advanced with an upset of top-seeded Paul VI. |

ETTRICK One play can change the complexion of a game.
With 1:12 left and Benedictine trailing by one, the Cadets’ Robert Johnson stole the ball from Bishop O’Connell and started running down the court for an easy layup. A Knights player ran him down and grabbed him midair, pinning his arms to his chest.
The referee blew his whistle, signaling not only an intentional foul, but the turning point in Benedictine’s 62-56 win over Bishop O’Connell (27-7) to win the VISAA Division I state championship on Saturday at Virginia State University’s Daniel Gymnasium.
“I got the steal and we were down,” Johnson said. “I was just worried about getting the layup and finishing the play.”
Johnson sank one of two free throws and then got the ball on the inbounds pass and sank one of his five 3-point shots to give Benedictine (31-4) a three-point lead with a minute to play.
Johnson said the steal that keyed the chain of events was something he wouldn’t be stopped in achieving.
“When we came out, we said we needed a stop there,” he said. “Whether it be a rebound, a steal, whatever. It just happened to be a steal. They had been running that play a lot, so I just jumped in there and got the steal.”
Nick Coppola, who had 20 points for Benedictine, said Johnson’s steal and subsequent 3-point shot were the defining moments.
“That was the momentum shift,” he said. “With the next play, when Rob hit it in the corner, we knew we weren’t going to lose this game.”
Bishop O’Connell kept it close after the shift when Junior Etou’s two free throws cut the lead to 58-56 with 15.9 seconds remaining.
L.G. Gill and Raymon Minor each sank their foul shots down the stretch as the seconds wound down, and the Knights’ desperation shots went wayward at the other end.
The game was a see-saw affair, with neither team leading by more than five points. Before halftime, the Knights’ Romelo Trimble had a chance to open a wider lead on the Cadets after he was fouled for a 1-and-1 opportunity and a technical foul was called on the Benedictine bench.
He went to the line with three guaranteed shots and missed them all. Bishop O’Connell led 26-25 at halftime.
Leroy Butts led the Bishop O’Connell with 23 points, Etou had 15 points and Timble added 13.
The back-and-forth nature of the game didn’t surprise Cadets coach Robert Churchwell III.
“The guys have worked hard all year,” he said. “Coming in, we knew they’d be prepared. Just like all year, they stuck together and they wanted it.”
Churchwell was hired in June 2012 by Benedictine and moved to Virginia from Harrison High School in Kennesaw, Ga.
“(Winning the state title) makes the decision to move my family 700 miles worth it,” he said. “I’m in a great place. It’s phenomenal.” |
