Brainiac Pizza, Harrowing Halloween and the Great Pumpkins

Thumbs up for Honor Roll pizza."  Ayden Gore gives his sign of approval for the "brain food" he's earned.  And, why not? He, along with Spencer Baird and a bunch of Cadets (including Victor Aguilar and Miles Moten, also in the pic) worked hard to make the honor roll.  Congratulations!

The Week's Uniform Schedule

Allow us to direct you to THE authoritative spot for finding out about the week's uniforms: School calendar

TWAB shall no longer carry uniform info for the upcoming week.  The upside is that the school website calendar details the daily uniform through the month of September!

Here is a link to information on the components of each uniform: uniforms

Big day for Lilly.  Coach Lilly poses with Mrs. Carli at the post-game ceremony at which our new weight room's coaching office was named for Coach Lilly's father.  It was quite a day, as Coach Lilly was honored for 10 years of Cadet coaching.  A roller coaster of a game ensued, with the Big Green emerging victorious.  That was followed by a dinner and ceremony.

Mother & Son Mass and Dinner:  Volunteers Needed

     Saturday, November 3 at 5 p.m.

Mass will be celebrated at 5 p.m. followed by a delicious dinner in the dining hall.  Volunteers are still needed to help ensure that this event runs as well as it has in the past.  There are still a couple of opportunities for Volunteer Dads. We need one more server and two more cleanup specialists.  Please lend a hand by signing up via this link

Trust issues.  They may look all pally-wally, but this pairing seems destined for a bad ending.  At least for the banana.  These two were part of the senior-driven festivities during Halloween's first formation.

Stay out of Jay's Way.  Sophomore Jay Woolfolk works his way into the end zone during the Cadets' victory over visiting Avalon.  Woolfolk was key to a victory that kept the Cadet playoff hopes alive.  Horrible weather didn't stop Benedictine from staging a remarkable third-quarter comeback to nab the win and keep in contention for a playoff berth.  Come see Big Green's season finale on Saturday, 1 p.m.

Attention Seniors – Hold the Date: Wednesday evening, November 14, 2018

In anticipation of the application deadlines looming on December 1st, there will be another application workshop at school in the computer lab on Wednesday evening, November 14th.  (This will be instead of the financial aid program noted on the school calendar.) Timing will be coordinated around sports practice ending times that day, and pizza will be available for pre-ordering for students wishing to start working immediately following practice.  Details will follow next week.

Attention Juniors/Junior parents:

Mrs. Metcalfe met with all juniors this week to highlight information reviewed at the junior/parent meeting last month concerning college planning and testing.  Juniors were advised to begin identifying and visiting colleges of interest this year and to finish the first semester strong.

Standardized testing was also discussed, noting that PSAT scores will be available around the time of Christmas break and will provide students with an opportunity to see how they would have performed if the SAT were instead taken that day.  Parents and students are encouraged to use this information once available to help decide how to approach spring testing. For planning purposes, please note that Mr. Fogarty will again hold a series of math prep sessions before spring testing, which will be around the third quarter.  Details will follow later.

Finally, the spring course registration process was also mentioned to underscore the importance of this semester's grades on students' eligibility for honors and AP classes next fall.  Mrs. Metcalfe will meet with junior classes again after Christmas break to explain this process in more detail and to further address college planning guidelines and testing questions.

Transcript Requests

 FAFSA/Financial Aid

All students and parents planning to apply for financial aid through the FAFSA website should plan to do so as soon as possible.  The earlier an application is completed, the better the chances funds will be available to qualified applicants.

 Scholarships/Leadership Opportunities

Early action is also recommended for scholarship applications.  The websites of target colleges should be reviewed early as many scholarships share the same deadlines as the admissions decisions, and a number of them have deadlines that are even earlier.  For an overview of many scholarship opportunities and strategies, see https://grasp4va.org/ or  https://grasp4va.org/scholarships

While many of the GRASP resources reference outside scholarships with later deadlines, it is helpful to plan for opportunities that may fit later and explore what is available now, including the following:

  • Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Seminar – This opportunity is available only to sophomores and involves participating in 3-4 days of interactive leadership training, meeting state leaders, and experiencing life on a university campus at the State Leadership Seminar.  The seminar occurs from May 31-June 2, 2019, at JMU but applications for this are being reviewed now.  To apply for this seminar as a fully funded participant, see Mrs. Metcalfe.  Applications are due by November 30th.  For more information about the program and other HOBY opportunities, see http://hoby.org/.

Getting in their last kicks.  The Benedictine varsity soccer team saw its season come to a close on the Cadets' soggy turf, falling to Collegiate to the tune of 5-2.  Come wish the seniors who have played their last match for Benedictine as they are honored, along with the football seniors, at halftime of Saturday's football game.
