In the "Nick" of time. Nick Turner makes a diving circus catch during the Cadets' big win over Blue Ridge last Saturday.  Turner and company will really have to turn up the juice if they are to take down invading St. Chris in the VISAA semifinal this Saturday.

From the World of Sports

Football: Will be taking on St. Christopher's in the VISAA Semifinals on Sat. Nov. 10th at Benedictine (see article below).  Game time is 1:00 p.m.
Admission for all VISAA Championship events is $10.  Coaches Club passes cannot be honored at VISAA events.
Students are reminded that they can pick up a free ticket to Saturday's football game from Mrs. Marchetti at the main office.  Tickets have been made available to the Cadets because of the generosity of an anonymous donor.
The general public can purchase tickets at the gate on Saturday, online at the Ticket Spicket link on the VISAA homepage or at the main office of the school.

For those unable to attend the game in person, we invite you to watch the game via the livestream that St. Chris has set up for it.  Here's the link:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVQwqXHwT9w

Parking Help: With the expectation of a huge crowd on Saturday for the football the gentlemen that assist with the parking need some assistance.  If you can help it would be greatly appreciated.  If you can please let Coach Fogarty know at jfogarty@benedictinecollegeprep.org.

Concession stand help:  Christy Gore is still in search of volunteers to staff the concession stand.  We're expecting quite a crowd, so all hands are welcome.  If interested, drop Christy a line at:  christy.gore@aol.com

A new chapter in an old story

Benedictine plays Saint Chris in the VISSA football playoff this Saturday

By Alex Castanien '20

Benedictine will tee-off against arch-rival Saint Chris through the VISAA football playoff system. That development came to be by the Cadets crushing Blue Ridge 57-3 and the Saints losing to Collegiate 35-21 last weekend.

The last time Big Green played the Saints was two years ago in a beat-down of the Saints, 42-7, in the season opener.

"We need to come out strong," said senior Blake Smith. "Everyone needs to do their jobs and set the pace for the game."

This season the Cadets are ranked second in the VISAA playoff bracket with a five-and-three record while Saint Chris is ranked third with a five-and-four record.

The Cadets look strong going into the game, with Jay Wolfolk scoring three touchdowns, throwing for 79 yards and rushing for 113 yards against Blue Ridge on Senior Day.  The line is anchored by this week's Athlete of the Week, center Cole Simon.  The defense is keyed by inside linebacker Charlie Garbett.   "We feel very happy to be in the playoffs," said Coach Lilly. "We are excited to play a team from the Richmond area."

Both Benedictine and Saint Chris were founded in 1911 in Richmond, so this is a very long rivalry. "It is fun for the seniors," Coach Lilly also said, "to play the Saints at Bobby Ross stadium."

Get beastly in your lifting.  The Athletic Department has announced that the Weight Room will be open from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and available to all Benedictine students, effective Monday, November 12.

Guidance News and Information

Upcoming College Visits for Students

The last fall college visitor is a representative from the US Naval Academy.  This representative will be visiting on Monday, November 19th, during the event period.  All students, especially sophomores and juniors, thinking about attending the Naval Academy, are encouraged to attend.

Attention Seniors – College Application Workshop Wednesday evening, November 14, 2018, beginning after football practice

In anticipation of the application deadlines looming on December 1, there will be another application workshop at school in the computer lab on Wednesday evening, November 14th.  (This will be instead of the financial aid program noted on the school calendar.) Students need to pre-register for the event.  Students who would like to pre-order a pizza dinner must also pay $5 pizza when pre-registering. The session will begin at approximately 6:00 p.m. and end at 8:00 p.m.

Those applying to Virginia Tech should be especially mindful of the December 1 early action deadline.  While the regular application deadline is in January, the VT representative indicated that waiting until that deadline may decrease (or eliminate) your chances of admission under their new application

Transcript Requests

Please remember to complete a timely transcript and recommendation request whenever needed.  This should be done regardless of the format used to apply (i.e. school website, common app or coalition app). Forms to request this are available from Mrs. Metcalfe.

NOTE: WHEN REQUESTING CREDENTIALS – TRANSCRIPTS OR RECOMMENDATIONS - ON THE COALITION APPLICATION ESPECIALLY, MRS. METCALFE'S EMAIL AND THE CREDENTIAL REQUESTED MUST BE PROVIDED IN CONNECTION WITH EACH INDIVIDUAL COLLEGE'S APPLICATION.

FAFSA/Financial Aid

All students and parents planning to apply for financial aid through the FAFSA website should plan to do so as soon as possible.  The earlier an application is completed, the better the chances funds will be available to qualified applicants.

 Scholarships/Leadership Opportunities

Early action is also recommended for scholarship applications.  The websites of target colleges should be reviewed early as many scholarships share the same deadlines as the admissions decisions, and a number of them have deadlines that are even earlier.  For an overview of many scholarship opportunities and strategies, see https://grasp4va.org/ or  https://grasp4va.org/scholarships

While many of the GRASP resources reference outside scholarships with later deadlines, it is helpful to plan for opportunities that may fit later and explore what is available now, including the following:

  • Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Seminar – This opportunity is available only to sophomores and involves participating in 3-4 days of interactive leadership training, meeting state leaders, and experiencing life on a university campus at the State Leadership Seminar.  The seminar occurs from May 31-June 2, 2019, at JMU but applications for this are being reviewed now.  To apply for this seminar as a fully funded participant, please download this information and application packet and turn it into Mrs. Metcalfe:  LinkApplications are due by November 30th.  For more information about the program and other HOBY opportunities, see http://hoby.org/.
