The Benedictine Cadets are to play Collegiate on Friday, at Collegiate. The Cadets are being led by Coach Royster, second year head coach, and are looking for a winning record this year.
“I think this will be a good breakout year,” testified senior Lorenz Boykin, “I think this will be a great coaching year for Coach Royster, and we're ready to bring our best out this year.”
Senior Malcolm Bridges has been appointed to serve as one of the team captains of the basketball team this year. He will be leading the team into games this year. Bridges has been at Benedictine since his freshman year, after reclassing from Varina.
Benedictine also welcomes multiple new faces who are likely to be helping the basketball team this season. Two of these newbies are freshman Joel Starlings and sophomore transfer Brandon Jenkins.Brandon Jenkins is coming from James River High School, our second James River transfer in the last two years. Jenkins plays point guard.Joel Starlings is coming from Trinity Episcopal School. Joel will likely play center.
The Cadet student section highly awaits the game. "I'm looking forward to the [basketball] student sections, based on how much fun they were last year," stated Charlie Williamson. "I hope we can beat Collegiate and start the season off right."
The Benedictine basketball team has been practicing every day since October 31 in preparation for this basketball season, although the roster for varsity has not yet been posted (due to late-arriving football players), "the team is ready to take on their rival, Collegiate, in a big season opener," according to junior Whit Williams.
The Benedictine basketball team currently has 22 games scheduled this season, with three additional multiple-day tournaments. Some of the biggest home games this year include Benedictine Vs St. Christopher's on January 3, the BCCC on December 27-29, and Collegiate on January 21.
