Senior CJ Griffith '20 gnawed his way to the top, earning distinction as Benedictine's athlete of the week. Griffith accomplished this with his three hard-fought wins wrestling in the Wildcat Duals at Lake Norman High School this past Saturday the December 7. "It was very competitive," said Griffith. "I fought hard for those wins."
Griffith's hardest and most competitive match of the meet was against Jake Baier, a wrestler from Christiansburg, who he defeated soundly.
Originally, Griffith and Baier would've had different match-ups, but due to a lineup change they had to duke it out. "Christiansburg bumped their lineup to avoid another one of our wrestlers, Zane Cox," said Head Coach of the wrestling team Mr. Yost. "But little did they know that CJ is a stud wrestler too, and he ended up beating a standout wrestler from Christiansburg in the end."
Griffith, currently ranked first in VISAA in the 160 lb. weight class, is not just a standout wrestler, but he is also a leader of the team, setting an example for his teammates. Griffith is known by his teammates as the kind of guy that pushes hard, but also knows how to have a little fun along the way. "He is a great guy, a great leader and has a great heart," said teammate Logan Chandler '21. "He knows how to keep his chin up through adversity."
Griffith has been working hard in the off season in preparation for what his team expects to be his best year to date. "He has put in a lot of hard work," said Coach Yost. "I believe that this is going to be his breakout season."
