Zane Cox is our Athlete of the Week. On Friday, February 7, Benedictine participated in the Melee at the Metro at Woodrow Wilson High School in D.C. Zane Cox '22 came out on top finishing first overall in the 152-pound division.
There were 32 teams that participated in the Melee at the Metro from all across the East Coast. Cox was facing approximately 30 other wrestlers in his division from some of the best schools around the country, and he came out on top. “Zane killed it this weekend,” said Coach Yost. “He went against two very tough opponents, but he was able to keep a level head and win his division.”
Cox had a very tough opponent in the Semifinal from the Bullis School, and then he defeated Owen Davis from Wyoming Seminary in the finals. Wyoming Seminary is nationally ranked, and has some of the strongest wrestlers in the country. "Zane looks like a senior when he wrestles," said Brian Daughtry '20. "He is always in control during his matches, and he is very good for a sophomore."
Cox has had a very strong year so far with his record being 31-5, only having five losses on the year. Cox placed second in Prep Nationals, and is ranked first in the State. He won in the St. Chris duals facing a very tough opponent. This weekend is the 2020 VISAA State Wrestling Tournament which will be hosted in Doswell, Virginia. "I think most of our wrestlers should be in the finals this weekend," said Coach Yost. "We have had a very strong year so far, and I believe we will continue to dominate."
