The Benedictine Cadets Rugby team visited T. C. Williams,"The Home of the Titans," for a match this past Saturday. The kickoff was at 11 o'clock on their football field. This was the first match of the season for Benedictine because of a forfeit by its last opponent.
"I am very excited for the rest of our season," said Alex Abolhousen. "We have some improving to do, but with the help of our new coach and his experience, we will have a good season."
The Cadets faced a strong offensive push from the Titans in the first half. They struggled to hang on but eventually got into rhythm near the end of the first half. Benedictine had two scorers during the game. Tim Grumblat, number eight, scored while playing the eight-man position. The other scorer for the Cadets was Aaron Smith, number six, scored while playing as a flanker alongside this reporter. "This game was a minor step back," Grumblat said. "We will come back stronger than ever since we have a game under our belt."
The Cadets suffered another kind of loss during the game. Cadet Freddy Gonzalez broke his ankle during the game. This is a loss to the team and a loss of a good player. The game also ended in a loss for the Cadets. The team plans to come back stronger and more prepared for the next match. "Even though we lost I'm glad that the new players were able to experience the game, and know what to expect in the future," said Jake Bartholomew. "We have the advantage of having a coach with a lot of experience in the game. Our team will be much more successful in our coming matches."
