On Saturday, January 8, the Benedictine Cadet wrestling team competed in the first annual East Coast Catholic Classic (ECCC). The Cadets were a part of 11 teams competing in the tournament including Delbarton School from Morristown, New Jersey-the number one ranked team in New Jersey and fourth in the nation, according to Rokfin.com.
The team as a whole had 11 pins over the course of the tourney. Dunham fell to Tyler Vazquez (Delbarton) by decision in the first-place match in the 132 weight class. Cox lost to Simon Ruiz (Delbarton) by fall. Foard succumbed to Coleman Nogle (Mount Saint Joseph) by fall.
The format for the tournament was a single bracket double elimination, across four mats spread across the hardwood of Coach Rut court. The ECCC was the first wrestling tournament to be held at the new state of the art McMurtrie-Reynolds Pavilion. "It felt great to compete at home in the new gym," said Ryan Nguyen '24. "The atmosphere was amazing throughout the entire building."
Delbarton School dominated the tournament, winning 11 individual titles, which placed them first in the tournament with the next closest competitor 94 points behind them.
The Cadet lineup for the tournament consisted of Liam Wasson (106), Luke Houchins (106), Jack Donner (106), Foard (120), Dunham (132), Freddy Barber (132), Michael Purcell (132), Brady Bollander (138), Thomas Gasperini (138), Nathan Smith (138), Christian Ferrell (145), Ronin Foldes (145), Nguyen (152), Cox (160), Sean Condon (182), Nick Markus (182), Caden Smith (220) and Stas Schoenborn (220).
