The Athlete of the Week at Benedictine College Preparatory is junior wrestler Brenden Barnes. He won his 100th match this past weekend at one of the toughest duals in Virginia, Battlefield Duals. In this tournament, Barnes finished with a 5-0 record. He faced tough competition against Colonial Forge, Kellam, Anapolis, Highland Springs and Broad Run. Barnes had a stellar performance, and the Cadets are extremely proud of his accomplishment.
Brian Daughtry, a senior heavyweight, said, “He has earned everything that he has accomplished because he is a hard-worker as well as being super-talented. “Not too many people in his weight class can beat him.”
Jonah Lambert, senior lightweight, said, "He is by far the best person in his weight class in the country, in my opinion.
"He is a phenomenal leader and captain of our team and he deserves all of the awards that he has earned due to his hard work."
Those are great things to be said about Barnes by his fellow teammates, who have watched him develop his skills as a wrestler over the years. His work ethic has definitely rubbed off on the rest of the team to help the Cadet matmen succeed as a whole.
When asked about how he felt about being awarded athlete of the week, Barnes stated, "It truly feels good to have all of my hard work pay off."
Barnes still has the rest of this wrestling season to add even more wins to his resume as well as his whole senior season next year. We are all excited to see what else is in store for the wrestling prodigy.
