The Benedictine Cadets will take in a tournament with a new coach and some new players. November 27 the Benedictine Basketball team started its season against Matoaca in the Rebel Invitational. The Green team looks to improve after last year's 8-17 record and got a nice start in nabbing a 13-point win. The Cadets lost seven players from last year, so there is opportunity for growth.
This year the Cadets are led by a new coach, Mark Royster, He took over last year after the departure of Coach Churchwell. “I love Coach Royster,” said team captain Ryan Boone. “He is like a second father to me I can always go to him.”
Coach Royster is also a Benedictine alumni and played on the basketball team when he was a Cadet.
The team this year has nine new faces on dressing out this year. "It is a new style of play for us," said Boone. "But I am impressed on how we have progressed so far."
On the team this year there are one transfer, one freshman, four players from JV last year and one player that did not play last year.
Along with coach Royster there is Coach Carpin who is also a Benedictine alumnus. "He is like the energy of the team," said Boone. "He fits into our team very well."
Then team continues play in the Rebel Invitational this week. The first home game will be on Dec. 12, when the Cadets host Millwood. Before then, the team has eight road games.
