On January 14, during halftime of the John Paul the Great vs Benedictine basketball game, Coach Ryan will present the state championship rings to the players who were on the 2021 state championship team.
With most alumni already back to college from their holiday breaks and some players out with Covid contact protocols the full team won't be in attendance for the astonishing night. Players who are back on their college campus have already got their rings since the ring ceremony was supposed to be on January 4th but was canceled because of Covid.
"It [stinks] that everyone couldn't be here at the same time with everything going on," stated baseball player Corey Adams. "But I got to see a lot of my old teammates over the break, and I know they all got their rings before going back to college."
Some players will also be signing their college letters during halftime. The team features these Cadets who will be playing at the next level: Corey Adams (William & Mary), Derrell Fletcher-Knight (VMI), Wil Moore (VMI), Dalton Rocke (EMU) and Sam Saunders (VWU).
All the signees wanted to wait for everyone to commit so they could all sign together as a team. These players played significant roles in the 2021 state championship season and hope to play huge roles in the upcoming season, while defending their state championship. "This might be my favorite day of the year so far this year, even though it's only been two weeks," stated senior Cadet Rocke. "I've been waiting for this since the day we won the state championship, and I'm also signing with my brothers, It's going to be a great day."
The ring ceremony is the final part to add to the remarkable season that the Benedictine baseball team had. At the beginning of the season, many key players were missing because of their participation in other sports. The Cadets started the season off 0-3 and was outscored by St. Chris and Miller 23-3 during the season. On April 23, the team had a record of 9-6 while on a two-game losing streak. After that the team went on a eleven-game win streak that included two wins in the playoffs and an 8-7 victory over St. Chris in the state championship game after losing to them 14-2 earlier in the season.
