The Benedictine Rugby team suffered a tough defeat in its second game of the season. The Cadets faced off against Newport News and lost by a score of 35-19. The game started with Newport News jumping straight out of the gate with a fury and intensity that the Cadets just couldn't match.
“We came out slow and timid on tackling, but later our aggression rose and we put up some points,” said junior Kam Lawrence. Lawrence’s quote perfectly describes the whole game.
The man behind most of the points for the Cadets, and the person who sparked the aggression within the team, was Kenny Howerton.
A senior this year, Cadet Kenny Howerton had two tries, and he was also the kicker, so he accumulated points from that part of the game as well.
Another bright spot for the Cadets was Cadet CJ Griffith. Griffith, who is a sophomore, had a try for the Cadets and played very aggressively.
Although the hard-hitters in the green and white were looking to start off their season with a win, the team is still young, and there are still many bright spots to build on that will help them succeed later in the season.
With a record of 0-1-1, the rugby team's next game is at home on March 17, at 1:00 pm. Go Cadets!
