Head Football Coach

Kurt von Bargen '04

Kurt von Bargen '04 returns to the Hill to lead the program he once played for. He won two state titles as a Cadet, coached college football for thirteen years, and was named 2025 VISAA Coach of the Year in his first season as Benedictine's head coach.


Career at a glance

  • All-State defensive back and two-time state champion, in 2000 and 2001, as a Cadet.
  • Football letterman at East Carolina University, class of 2009. He played in three bowl games and won the 2008 Conference USA championship, and he was a two-time Rudy Award nominee.
  • Thirteen years as a college coach and coordinator at every division: the Power Four, FBS, FCS, Division II, and Division III.
  • His coaching stops included the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Dartmouth, Trinity College, South Florida, Maine, and Chowan. Those included an Ivy League school and a service academy.


At Benedictine

He came back as offensive coordinator in 2023, and Benedictine won VISAA Division I state championships that season and the next. The school named him head coach in 2025. He won a third state title in his first year in charge and was voted VISAA Coach of the Year.

Head Basketball Coach

Sidney McCray

Sidney McCray takes over Benedictine basketball after six seasons as head coach at St. Maria Goretti in Hagerstown, Maryland, where he won 112 games and was twice named coach of the year.


Career at a glance

  • Played at Shepherd University and earned a bachelor's degree in fitness and exercise science.
  • Joined the coaching staff at St. Maria Goretti Regional Catholic High School in 2014 and was named head coach in 2018.
  • Won 112 games in six seasons at Goretti, sent 20 players on to college basketball, and was twice named coach of the year.
  • Also served at Goretti as director of athletics, dean of students, assistant athletic director, and registrar.


At Benedictine

McCray was named head coach of the Cadets in 2024, taking over a program with a long history and a VISAA title tradition. He joined Benedictine full-time as a learning specialist, supporting students in and out of the classroom, and also serves as Dean of Boys. Before Goretti, he spent five years in the summit program for Washington County Public Schools, working with students who needed learning, emotional, and behavioral support.

Strength and Conditioning

Logan Cohn

Logan Cohn brings national-champion credentials to the Cadet weight room. A USA Weightlifting U23 National Champion and a former starting center at Hampden-Sydney College, he trains Benedictine athletes with the same standard he holds himself to.


Career at a glance

  • Played Football at Hampden-Sydney College.
  • USA Weightlifting U23 National Champion in the 109+ kg class, crowned at Nationals in Pittsburgh in June 2024 with a 237 kg (522 lb) total: a 103 kg (226 lb) snatch and a 134 kg (295 lb) clean and jerk.
  • Earned a bachelor's degree in History, with a Law and Public Policy focus, from Hampden-Sydney, Class of 2025.

Head Wrestling Coach

David Yost

David Yost, 2-time VISAA Wrestling Head Coach of the Year, has led the Cadets to two VISAA Team State titles.


Career at a glance

  • Wrestled collegiately at NCAA Div. 1 Virginia Military Institute, where he started for 4 years at 141/149 pounds and placed 3rd at the 2010 Southern Conference Championships.
  • Has coached 21 individual National Prep All-American honors
  • Has coached 27 individual VISAA State Champions
  • Serves as the VISAA Wrestling Chairman and the Virginia representative on the National Prep Wrestling Board
  • In high school, Coach Yost wrestled at Fauquier, where he amassed a 181-30 record and was a 2x State Runner-Up & 3x State Place-winner.


At Benedictine

Coach Yost has headed up the Benedictine Wrestling squad for 8 years. He led the BCP squad to VISAA Team State Titles in 2020 and 2026. He is a 2-time VISAA Wrestling Head Coach of the Year.

Head Soccer Coach

Bob Marcellus

Coach Marcellus, who has served as head coach and clinician for numerous Richmond area soccer programs, is entering his second year coaching varsity soccer at BCP in the fall and SGHS in the spring.


Career at a glance

  • Assistant Coach Catawba College NC - NAIA 
  • NSCAA All-America Team at Catawba College
  • NAIA All-America Team at Catawba College

Cross Country Coach

Scott Schaefer '98

Scott Schaefer '98 returns to coach BSoR cross country this fall after taking several years off from coaching.  He is the athletic director at Saint Mary’s Catholic School, where he has taught for over 20 years.  He is very excited to be back at BSoR as a coach and now as a parent, with a son in the class of 2030. 

Career at a glance

  • Schaefer previously coached 12 years at Benedictine and 11 years for Saint Gertrude.
  • Named to the All State VISAA and State Catholic teams for cross country and track multiple times as a Cadet
  • Holds many school records in both the indoor and outdoor 4 x 800 relay
  • Schaefer was part of Coach Savage’s first State Catholic Track Championship team in 1998. 
  • Finished 5th in the VISAA Cross Country Championship his senior year
  • Finished 2nd in the 3200m at the VISAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships his junior year


At Benedictine

Coach Schaefer won Cavalier Conference Coach of the Year in 2008. He led the team to back-to-back cross-country titles in the Cavalier Conference and won the conference title for track. He led the Cadets to two runner-up finishes in the State Catholic Track and Field Championships during his previous tenure and coached many All-VISAA athletes.

Golf Coach

Drew Mugford '86

The BCP golf team has been ranked in the top eight in recent years under the direction of Coach Drew Mugford.


Career at a glance

  • In addition to high school golf, he has coached multiple sports in the Richmond area including football, baseball, and middle school basketball.
  • Earned varsity letters in golf, soccer, track, and cross country as a BCP Cadet


At Benedictine

  • Over the past two years, the golf team has competed closely for a spot in the state championship.
  • Coach Mugford is entering his seventh year as the varsity golf coach.
